SALT LAKE CITY — A brush fire near a shooting range on the south side of I-80 on Mountain Dell burned through three to five acres just hours after it began.

The fire began at 2 p.m. Saturday, and though the cause of the fire was not known, Unified Fire Battalion Chief Brian Anderton said it was most likely caused by gunfire.

More than 60 crew members from Unified Fire, Park City Fire Department, Salt Lake City Fire Department and Camp Williams were working to put out the fire along with at least Black Hawk helicopter pilots.

"The terrain is pretty difficult," he said. "There's no roads, it's pretty steep terrain so it takes more time to work through that terrain."

He said the crews are working to keep the fire from subdivisions and estimated it could be a few days before the fire is completely extinguished.

Anderton said the fire is far enough up Parley's Canyon that no road closures have been issued so far.
