"TEMPLES: Sacred Symbolism, Eternal Blessings (Fireside on CD)," by David J. Ridges, Cedar Fort, 51 minutes
Because of the sacred nature of temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, many things that occur within them are discussed only within their walls. A few books have been written that provide appropriate and enlightening details, and a recent audio fireside titled "Temples: Sacred Symbolism, Eternal Blessings" gives listeners some great insights. It's a companion to a book by the same title.
Throughout the audio CD, speaker and author David J. Ridges answers frequently asked questions many people have about the temple, such as "What is the purpose of washings and anointings?" and "Why is the temple so secret?"
He begins his audio presentation by explaining that the temple is Heavenly Father's classroom.
"The temple endowment relates the journey of mortal man," he says. He goes on to explain why the endowment is a gift and why covenants are always associated with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
One of the things Ridges explores in depth is the nature of symbolism. He says symbolism is found throughout the scriptures and religion, and he gives many specific examples illustrating that point.
Ridges speaks about how people who attend the temple can get more out of their temple worship and about who the real teacher is when people are trying to understand the symbolism of the temple.
One of the most fascinating parts of the recording is a detailed explanation of some of the features of the Salt Lake Temple in Utah. For example, he explains that the meaning of the all-seeing eye on the Salt Lake City was described by Truman Angell, architect for the temple, and that it represents that God is watching his children so he can help them and provide them with the things they need.
Ridges also talks about the reasons for the temple garment and the history of sacred garments among several religions of the world. He relates several stories from the scriptures and from personal experience to round out his presentation.
The CD recording is for those who would like to learn more about the temple, and it would be great for youths or adults. Certain things will make more sense to those who have already attended the temple.
