SHARE Remembering President Boyd K. Packer 1 year after his death

One year has passed since the death of President Boyd K. Packer on July 3, 2015.

President Packer was serving as president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was second in seniority when he passed away at the age of 90.

A Brigham City, Utah, native, President Packer lived a life of service. He served his country during World War II as a member of the Army Air Corps. He was the faith's fifth longest-serving general authority at 53 years, 45 of them as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve.

“He was truly an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ. From the crown of his head to the soles of his feet, he represented the Savior of the world,” Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve said in a statement released by the church following President Packer’s passing.

In 1972, as a newly called apostle, then-Elder Packer was assigned to serve with then-Elder Thomas S. Monson and Elder Bruce R. McConkie on a scripture committee. Together with hundreds of others, the committee worked for nine years to compile what President Packer called “the library of the Lord,” adding 1,268 pages of study helps to the faith’s four standard works.

President Packer was married to Donna Smith Packer and the couple had 10 children and 60 grandchildren at the time of his passing. His son, Elder Allan F. Packer, said that he was preparing his talk for the upcoming October general conference when he died. The talk would have been his 108th general conference address.

"I think he'd want to be remembered as a father and husband first, and then as an obedient member of the church and a priesthood holder who did all that he could to respond to what the Lord wanted him to do," Elder Packer said.
