OREM — An Orem man is in jail after police say he shot his younger brother in the chest Thursday.

Arthur Henry Freek, 60, was booked into Utah County Jail Thursday evening on suspicion of attempted murder and domestic violence in the presence of a child.

Prosecutors have not formally charged him with either crime. It was not immediately clear Thursday afternoon if he had an attorney.

The shooting left the 53-year-old victim alive but in critical condition. He was in the hospital Thursday.

Other family members were in Freek's home at the time of the shooting, said Orem Police Lt. Craig Martinez. Police have not yet released the name of the shooting victim who they say managed to make his way onto the front lawn, where officers found him.

Orem police received the call reporting a shooting at 515 E. 1834 South just after 1:30 p.m., Martinez said.

Freek briefly had a standoff with officers, refusing to come out of his house for about 25 minutes before surrendering, he said. Detectives were not sure Thursday whether the brothers both lived in the house.

Police were still were conducting interviews to sort out what led up to the shooting.

Freek has no apparent criminal record in Utah.
