SALT LAKE CITY — “Avengers: Endgame” originally had a different title.
“Endgame” directors Anthony and Joe Russo recently spoke on the MTV "Happy Sad Confused" podcast about the new Marvel film, which centered on the Avengers working to reverse the damage done by Thanos’ snap, which killed half of the universe.
- The Russos said “Endgame” had a different title.
- "Well it was ‘Infinity Gauntlet’ for a long time," said Joe Russo on the podcast.
“Infinity Gauntlet” is the name of the famous comic book series where Thanos obtained the Infinity Gauntlet and the Infinity Stones and snapped half the universe into oblivion.
“Endgame” was a reference to a line from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) in “Infinity War,” in which he told Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) that the Avengers were “in the endgame now” after he gives up the Time Stone to Thanos.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said “Endgame” was kept a secret for so long because it was a spoiler for “Infinity War,” according to Collider.
- “Well, I think I’d said that it all had gotten blown out of proportion to some extent. But it was a spoiler, because if you knew before ‘Infinity War’ came out that the next movie was called Endgame, then you know that there wasn’t an ending to Infinity War. But that had been the title of the movie from the moment we conceived of doing the two films. In large part, because … it’s seeded right there. I mean, it’s seeded in 'Ultron.'”
The Russos said they almost split “Endgame” into two movies, too.
“We used to joke about [splitting the movies in two] all the time,” Joe Russo said. “Because Alan Horn at Disney had overseen ‘Lord of the Rings’ and he used to joke about it. Like, three-hour movie, just cut it in half. I don’t know that it would have achieved this kind of success had we split it up.”
