SALT LAKE CITY — Apple previously limited iPhone repairs to authorized shops and company stores, but a new policy reversal means you have more freedom in getting your phone fixed.
The Verge reports the company recently announced a new Independent Repair Provider Program, which aims to provide official device parts to third-party repair businesses. Previously, these stores would have to register and pay Apple a fee to become an authorized service provider.
Now, repair shops across the United States can buy official parts and tools from Apple with a catch — technicians will need to complete a free training course to service “the most common out-of-warranty iPhone repairs,” which could mean battery and screen replacements.
The new decision follows controversy involving third-party repairs locking iPhone owners out of viewing battery health data on newer phones, which I previously reported on for the Deseret News. Phones specifically affected are the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max.
Engadget also notes iPhone repairs are also already available at Best Buy stores.
Ben Bajarin, a Creative Strategies analyst, also told Metro the increased likelihood for repairs could lead to iPhone owners passing down their refurbished devices to friends and family.
“That helps (Apple) get the product more affordably into the hands of more customers and increases the base,” he said.
However, prices for official Apple parts could be more expensive than aftermarket components, which means repair costs could see an increase, according to The Verge.
