Well, 2021 seems to be the year of unique and stunning celestial phenomena. After April’s pink supermoon and May’s super flower blood moon, June will also display a supermoon: The strawberry supermoon, says Inverse, a news media organization.

  • On Thursday, June 24, the strawberry supermoon will be visible across the U.S. just after sunset, according to Newsweek.
  • This year is the first time since 2014 that supermoons shined three consecutive months, reported Inverse.

June’s strawberry supermoon will be the last supermoon of 2021, according to Inverse.

What is a strawberry supermoon?

Despite its name, the strawberry supermoon won’t resemble a strawberry and likely will have a golden color rather than being red, USA Today reported

The term “strawberry moon” comes from Algonquin tribes in the Northeastern U.S. and references the short harvest seasons for strawberries, reports Newsweek. In Europe, June’s full moon was first called a “honey moon” and, due to June being the month for marriages, the term is likely connected to newlyweds going on a “honeymoon,” said The Farmer’s Almanac.

  • June’s full moon is the last full moon of the spring or the first full moon of the summer, said Newsweek.

This year’s strawberry moon is unique because it’s also a supermoon. Supermoons occur when the full moon coincides with the closest point in the moon’s orbit, according to Inverse.

  • Supermoons appear 7% larger and 15% brighter than normal because of the moon’s proximity to Earth, Inverse reported.

June’s full moon is extra special because it’s both a supermoon and the third consecutive supermoon of 2021.

When can you see the strawberry supermoon?

Although the strawberry supermoon will be full at 12:40 p.m. MT on Thursday, it won’t be visible until in the evening, just after sunset, CNN reported. The moon will also appear close to full on Friday night, according to the Washington Post.

For those who want to get a good photo, moonrise is the best time. The strawberry moon will appear at its largest and most bright when it is just above the horizon, NPR reported.

  • The next supermoon will occur in June 2022, said Inverse.
