A year after Richfield denied Morgan a shot at a fifth straight 3A golf state championship, the teams are once again in another tight battle at the state tournament.

Morgan shot a 295 during the first day at Meadowbrook Golf Course on Wednesday and leads Richfield by four strokes after the defending champion Wildcats shot a 299. Carbon and Union are close behind after shooting 304.

Conditions were tough throughout the day with off and on rain showers, but four golfers still managed to shoot under par, with five more shooting even par.

Region 13 champion Lance Loughton is the Day 1 individual leader as the Morgan junior shot a 5-under 67 on Wednesday to lead Richfield’s Pace Mullen by one stroke after he shot a 4-under.

Loughton made eight birdies in his round, and was at 7-under at one point, but he bogeyed No. 17 and No. 18 to give the rest of the 3A field some hope going into Day 2.
