6A Playoffs
Layton 2, Copper Hills 1
No. 6 seed Layton ended an incredible season for the No. 3 seed Copper Hills with a 2-1 victory to advance to the 6A semifinal. Copper Hills set a program record with 14 wins after two previous consecutive seasons of five wins, but came up just short of a semifinal appearance. Layton’s Jersee Clapier was crucial in the upset win for the Lancers, scoring one goal and assisting another to lead them to victory. The tough defense from Layton in the second half secured the quarterfinal victory and sets up a matchup with No. 2 seed Lone Peak.
Lone Peak 3, Farmington 0
No. 2 seed Lone Peak blitzed past No. 10 seed Farmington with a 3-0 victory. Sam Sellers, Kate Denney, and Brooklyn Dowdle all found the back of the net in the win. Lone Peak goalkeeper Eliza Collings notched her state-leading 13th shutout of the season to continue the Knights’ historically dominant defensive season. Lone Peak will face No. 6 seed Layton in the 6A semifinal.
American Fork 2, Mountain Ridge 1
No. 5 seed American Fork used a strong second half to claim the victory over No. 4 seed Mountain Ridge. Kya Newton gave the Sentinels the lead early, but Lila Millward found the back of the net and then assisted a goal to Sophie Eckery to give American Fork the lead. The American Fork defense held strong against a Mountain Ridge offense that came into the game averaging nearly three goals. American Fork advances to face No. 8 seed Skyridge in the 6A semifinal.
Skyridge 1, Davis 0
No. 8 seed Skyridge upset previously unbeaten No. 1 seed Davis with a narrow 1-0 victory. The Falcons defense stood strong against a potent Davis offense. Mercede Sampson was the hero on the offensive end, finding the back of the net in the 60th minute to give Skyridge the lead. It was able to hang on behind the shared shutout for Allie Noorda and Emalynn Levingston. Skyridge will face off against No. 5 seed American Fork in the 6A semifinal next week.
5A Playoffs
Olympus 0, Wasatch 0 (Olympus advanced on PKs 3-1)
No. 6 seed Olympus upset No. 3 seed Wasatch in a thrilling match that ended in a penalty shootout. Keepers Joss Baker and Antonia Dunn recorded shutouts during regulation and extra time for their respective teams. The Titans then relied on three clutch players, Dani Lunceford, Ella Schujter and Eliza Anderson, to bury penalty kicks and advance to the 5A semifinal against No. 10 seed Maple Mountain.
Brighton 2, Spanish Fork 0
Spanish Fork’s surprising march into the 5A quarterfinals came to an end despite a spirited effort against the eighth-seeded Bengals. The 16th-seeded Dons upset top seed Skyline in the second round, but went down early to Brighton in the quarterfinals as Paige Christensen scored on an Isabella Dowdle cross just three minutes into the match. Brighton maintained the 1-0 lead throughout the physical match, with Sydney Johnson eventually taking on an insurance goal in the 70th minute to push the Bengals into the semifinals for the first time since 2014.
Maple Mountain 1, Clearfield 0
No. 10 seed Maple Mountain continued its miraculous postseason run with another 2OT upset win, this time over No. 2 seed Clearfield. The Golden Eagles defeated Timpview 3-2 in 2OT in the second round and their extra time heroics carried on against the Falcons of Clearfield. Kesley Jewkes scored the game-winner off a pass from Sierra Jacobson with only 1:10 remaining in the second overtime period. Anya Gulley was crucial in goal for Maple Mountain to slow down the potent Clearfield offense. Maple Mountain will now face No. 6 seed Olympus, looking for another upset in the semifinal.
Bountiful 3, Springville 3 (Bountiful advanced on PKs 6-5)
No. 5 seed Bountiful won a thrilling penalty shootout contest over No. 4 seed Springville to advance to the 5A semifinals. Bountiful jumped out to an early lead at halftime before Springville’s Mattie Neves scored two of her three goals in the second half to give the Red Devils the lead late. Bountiful scored again late in the second half to send the game to overtime.
Despite the flurry of goals in regulation, neither team found the back of the net in overtime, as the game was decided from the spot, with the Redhawks prevailing 6-5. Myka Page, Belle Sorensen, Caroline Hellewell, Emmy Sorensen, Avah Spinning and Oakley Jensen all made their PKs for Bountiful. Bountiful will face off against No. 8 seed Brighton in the next round.
4A Playoffs
Green Canyon 2, Crimson Cliffs 0
No. 1 seed Green Canyon continued its journey to the state championship with a 2-0 victory over No. 8 seed Crimson Cliffs. The Wolves found the back of the net first with a goal from Capriel Winder just after halftime. Green Canyon hung onto its one goal lead until Austin Miller carried the ball around several Crimson Cliffs’ defenders and put the game away with a shot to the far post. Green Canyon advances to the semifinal to face off against the No. 4 seed Ridgeline.
Ridgeline 2, Timpanogos 1
No. 4 seed Ridgeline won a 2OT thriller against No. 5 seed Timpanogos to advance to the 4A semifinal. Ridgeline defender Sydnee Zollinger opened the scoring with a free-kick goal in the 28th minute. Timpanogos answered with a goal from Malia Jessop just after halftime. The score would remain tied through regulation, and it wasn’t until a 97th minute goal from Brenli Wolford that the Riverhawks pulled ahead for good. Ridgeline will face off against No. 1 seed Green Canyon in the next round.
Stansbury 2, Mountain View 0
No. 2 seed Stansbury defeated No. 7 seed Mountain View for a spot in the 4A semifinal. The Stallions received scoring contributions from Emie Major and Abby Holdstock to propel them to the next round. The tough Stansbury defense, which only allowed 10 goals during the regular season, proved again why it has been so dominant with another shutout. Stansbury will face No. 3 seed Park City in the next round.
Park City 2, Snow Canyon 1
No. 3 seed Park City survived an upset scare against No. 11 seed Snow Canyon with a 2-1 victory. Park City keeper Livi Johnson saved a Snow Canyon penalty kick in the 36th minute to keep the scored tied at zero heading into halftime. From there, the Park City offense caught fire and scored two quick goals to give them the lead. Ashlee Harris scored for the Warriors to narrow the lead to one goal, but ultimately it wasn’t enough as Park City advances to the 4A semifinal to face No. 2 seed Stansbury.
