Utah and BYU may not be in the national spotlight quite as often as Deion Sanders and his Colorado team during his first season coaching the Buffaloes, but both programs got some residual spotlight in a “Saturday Night Live” skit on Coach Prime over the weekend.
Comedian Kenan Thompson parodied the Colorado coach during a Weekend Update skit alongside comedian and Weekend Update co-anchor Colin Jost, with Thompson delivering several hilarious Coach Prime-esque moments during the four-plus-minute sketch.
At one point, Thompson, as Coach Prime, started talking about Colorado’s record.

“Colin, we unstoppable man. We’ve only lost three games. I can’t even think of a team that’s lost fewer than that,” Thompson said.
Jost was quick to point out a few, among them Texas, Alabama and Ole Miss.
Then that list grew and grew, and it included Utah (5-1) and BYU (4-2).
The exchange starts at the 2:58 mark in the skit.
What jokes were part of the Coach Prime SNL skit?
In addition to talking about Colorado’s record, the skit included jokes about:
- Colorado blowing a 29-0 lead against Stanford before losing 46-43 in double overtime. “We were up 29-0 at the half, so I went home and fell asleep,” Thompson joked. “I woke up this morning shocked as anyone.”
- The difference between a historically black college and university (HBCU) and what Thompson, as Coach Prime, called a historically white college — joking that Jost’s alma mater, Harvard, belongs in the latter category.
- Name, image and likeness even came up, with a shoutout to when the real Deion Sanders made an appearance on SNL in 1995 and showed off his musical and dancing skills.
