After a breakout season with the Green Bay Packers, Jordan Love is in line for a major contract extension.
It appears increasingly likely that Love’s new contract will fall somewhere in the realm of recent contracts handed out to Kyler Murray, Deshaun Watson and Dak Prescott.
That means an extension worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
According to Spotrac’s latest projections, Love — who will otherwise be in the final year of his rookie contract in 2024 — is expected to be offered a four-year, $200 million extension with the Packers this spring.
That expected new contract would include something along the lines of a $50 million dollar signing bonus, plus nearly $90 million guaranteed at signing, making for nearly $150 million in almost certain guarantees, per Spotrac.
It is a contract fit for a star NFL quarterback and one that Love earned with his play last season, particularly at the end of the regular season and into the postseason, when he helped lead the Packers to a wildcard berth and eventually the divisional round of the playoffs.
“Love more than outplayed his bridge extension in 2023, making it unrealistic that he would play out the 2024 campaign on a 1 year, $11M contract,” Spotrac’s Michael Ginnitti writes. “We’ve projected a 4 year, $200M extension for the 25 year old, including a $50M signing bonus, & $87.5M fully guaranteed at signing. The deal contains large roster bonuses that vest one offseason early for 2026 ($37.5M) & 2027 ($25M) raising the practical guarantee on this deal up to $150M. Love secures a $40M raise this season within this projection.”
That $40 million raise would be more than Love has earned thus far in his three-year professional career after leaving Utah State following the 2019 season.
Love has made $19,883,455 so far with the Packers, after signing a 4-year rookie contract for just over $30 million after being taken in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft.
Love is projected to get one of the weightier extensions for a quarterback this offseason, behind only Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence and Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa, with Prescott also in the mix.
Spotrac projects Lawrence to get a six-year, $300 million contract extension, while Tagovailoa has been tabbed closer to four years for $220 million. Prescott, fresh off a four-year, $160 million deal, is currently being projected to land a new contract for around three years and $180 million.
If it happens as predicted, Love’s extension would land him among the top 10 highest paid quarterbacks in the NFL — as things currently stand — though not in the same tier as QBs like Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Justin Herbert or Jalen Hurts.
Still, a contract valued in the hundreds of millions would represent a significant step up for Love, one that feels fitting given projections for his career going forward.
More than a few pundits believe Love will be in the MVP race next season, and not only that but that he could realistically lead the Packers on a deep playoff run, even to the Super Bowl.
Said ESPN’s Matt Bowen: “Love has a dynamic and versatile group of pass-catchers, plus a system that maximizes his throwing traits. He’s in position to produce high-end numbers for a championship-level team.”
It appears Love is soon to be paid like he is the quarterback on a title contender, too.
