Porsche has revealed a new model in their Taycan electric vehicle (EV) series, called the Turbo GT. Porsche described it as its most powerful yet, having broken a world record at the Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca in California last month.

What’s the Taycan Turbo GT?

According to CNN, the Porsche Taycan is a four-door sedan that was first released in 2019 as Porsche’s first electric vehicle. In the Porsche Taycan sedan line, there are currently six models, while the Porsche Taycan cross turismo line has four models, according to Porsche’s official website. All of these models have speeds of over 130 mph and over 400 horsepower.

The newest model in this lineup is the Taycan Turbo GT and it’s the fastest in the series, according to Forbes, with a max speed of 190 mph. There are two versions of the Turbo GT, the original model and the model that comes with a Weissach Package, per Porsche.

The only difference between the two versions is weight. The Turbo GT that has the Weissach Package weighs 154 pounds less than the normal Turbo GT, per Forbes.

CNN shares the details of what makes this car Porsche’s fastest yet.

  • The Turbo GT has two motors that allows it to get over 1,000 horsepower.
  • The Turbo GT will average 777 horsepower, higher than the gas-powered Toyota Prius of 196 horsepower.
  • The Turbo GT has special features called “launch control” and “attack mode” that will temporarily increase its horsepower in certain settings.

What’s the world record for the fastest EV car?

According to Top Gear, the Tesla Model S held the record for the fastest lap done by an electric car at the Laguna Seca racetrack, about 1 minute and 32 seconds. But the Porsche Turbo GT took that record and beat it with a time of 1 minute and 27.8 seconds.

The Turbo GT was also tested at the Nürburgring Nordschleife track in Germany, where it had a record lap time of 7:07.55 minutes, according to Porsche. This makes it the fastest four-door car record and electric car record at Nürburgring Nordschleife, per Forbes.

The previous record holder at the Nürburgring Nordschleife race track was a Tesla Model S Plaid Track Package, according to CNN. It had a time stamp of 7:25.231, according to The Verge.

The Porsche Taycan Turbo GT is available to order with a starting price of $230,000.

What are other world records in the car racing world?

The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, or FIA, is an organization that helps govern the motor sports world and keeps track of world records within their domain. They cover FIA World Championships, cross-country championships and esports, to name a few.

Their most popular list of records is the “Outright World Land Speed Record”, which holds the world record for fastest speed ever recorded, which was a twin turbofan jet-powered car that broke the sound barrier in 1997 when it reached 763.035 mph.

The Formula 1 championships also has a world record for the fastest lap award. Max Verstappen holds the 2023 DHL Fastest Lap Award by placing nine of the fastest laps during the 2023 Formula 1 Championship while using a Red Bull Racing Honda RBPT.

Another world record is the most races accomplished at the World Rally Championship by an individual, which is held by Jari-Matti Latvala from Finland. He had a total of 209 races at the World Rally Championship between 2002 and 2020, per Guinness World Records.
