Netflix is developing a new “Spongebob Squareopants” spinoff show centered around the character Squidward, according to The New York Times.
- The series will reportedly center around the musician and be a “music-based” show. But that’s all we know so far.
- It’s unclear if the new show will have any ties to Squidward’s time at the Krusty Krab or when he knows Spongebob. It’s also unclear if the show will take place in the past either.
What they’re saying: “But honestly, this spinoff is loooong overdue because Squidward speaks to a lot of us who have grown up since watching SpongeBob as kids,” according to BuzzFeed News. “He knows the struggle of going to work. Every. Single. Day. And he truly understands how a daily routine can get just a tad bit dull.”
Bigger picture: The announcement comes one day after Netflix and Nickelodeon announced a new deal reportedly worth $200 million to collaborate on new shows, spinoffs and reboots, according to The Verge.
The new Nickelodeon-Netflix deal was announced the same week that Disney launched its new Disney Plus service, which has been a perfect service for families, experts told the Deseret News.
Nickelodeon and Netflix will look to combat that deal. “As the so-called streaming wars heat up, children’s programming has become one of the most competitive fronts. Netflix has ramped up production of cartoons, children’s sitcoms and animated movies, in part to compensate for Disney content that is leaving the service,” according to The New York Times.
