SALT LAKE CITY — Superhero movie reboots aren’t necessarily unusual, but the wildly successful Marvel Cinematic Universe could get its first major reboot with the Inhumans.
According to ComicBook.com, MCU Cosmic — an MCU-focused fansite — indicates Marvel Studios is considering overhauling the royal totally-not-mutants after introducing characters like Ms. Marvel. The Inhumans have already been featured in MCU-adjacent projects like “Agents of SHIELD” and “The Inhumans,” which was canceled after a very rough first season.
MovieWeb reports the Inhumans debuted in 1965 and have ties to the Kree, who have popped up as antagonists in “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Captain Marvel.” The superpowered society was created using Terrigen mist, which gives regular humans superpowers.
A royal Inhuman family lives on the dark side of the moon, but ScreenRant notes these specific characters — like Black Bolt and Medusa — are usually pretty unlikable, mostly due to their isolationism and institution of a strict class system and slavery.
Instead, MCU Cosmic notes an “Inhumans” reboot would likely focus on Ms. Marvel, who will appear in a recently-announced Disney Plus show. Herb Scribner recently reported for Deseret News the show focuses on Kamala Khan, who is an Inhuman and can change the shape of her body at will.
The X-Men — who are also getting an MCU reboot — also share an awkward connection with the Inhumans. Polygon notes Marvel tried to use the Inhumans as a replacement for the more popular mutants since Fox owned the film rights to Wolverine and friends. Of course, this little snag was resolved when Disney purchased Fox, making the Inhumans a little less necessary for Marvel Studios’ plans.
It’s unclear when the Inhumans could return, but Deseret News notes Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased the X-Men and Fantastic Four will likely return following Phase Four of the MCU, which includes new movies featuring the Eternals, Shang Chi and Doctor Strange.
