There’s been a long-running question among “Star Wars” fans since the prequel trilogy was released: In “The Empire Strikes Back,” did Yoda recognize R2D2?

Context:

  • In the original “Star Wars” trilogy, we see Luke Skywalker and R2D2 meet Jedi Master Yoda on Dagobah. Yoda soon agrees to train Luke about the Force and how to be a Jedi.
  • We believe this is the first meeting between all three. But in the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy, we learn R2D2 and Yoda ran in some of the same social circle.
  • And now, a new book has confirmed that Yoda knew who R2D2 was in “Empire Strikes Back.”

Details:

The book “From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back” reveals the moment in a chapter about Yoda titled “The First Lesson.”

The Deseret News was emailed a copy of the book, which allowed us to verify the exchange, which reads:

“Carefully moving through the swamp while staying beneath the fog, Yoda soon spotted the boy and his droid unpacking their supplies. Even though the droid was caked with algae, dirt, and stomach fluid, its appearance and familiar blips were still quite recognizable.

“R2-D2.

“Of course the boy had Anakin’s old droid with him. Such cycles of fate no longer surprised the nine-hundred-year-old Jedi.”
