The popular “Percy Jackson” books are getting a live-action TV series on Disney Plus, author Rick Riordan announced with his wife Becky on Twitter Thursday.
“We can’t say much more at this stage,” Riordan wrote on Twitter, “but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one.”
The “Percy Jackson & The Olympians” series follows 12-year-old Percy Jackson through adventures as he discovers that he is the son of the Greek god Poseidon — which means he is a demigod, according to Variety.
The series was previously adapted for the screen, with two movies in 2010 and 2013, according to Entertainment Weekly. But many fans of the books were less than impressed by the movies and have been clamoring for a more faithful adaptation ever since.
Riordan has been vocal about the lack of control he felt over the film versions of “Percy Jackson.” In a 2018 blog post, he wrote that when he “saw the final script and saw what they were doing on the set, I realized I had to step away for my own peace of mind,” according to The Verge.
It seems Riordan will have more say in the Disney Plus series.
The author wrote on Twitter: Rest assured that Becky & I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show.”
