Actor Dennis Quaid has a new addition to his household— a black cat named Dennis Quaid.
Quaid is in the process of adopting the cat from the Lynchburg Humane Society in Virginia.
“It was really off the wall but we couldn’t resist,” Quaid said in an interview with local news station 10 News, adding, “I’m out to save all the Dennis Quaids of the world.”
The actor is the executive producer of the pet podcast, “The Pet Show with Dennis Quaid and Jimmy Jellinek.”
He first heard about the cat from a local news report stating that a black rescue cat named Dennis Quaid was residing at a shelter in Virginia was in need of a new home, according to CNN.
In the beginning, he thought someone was “pranking” him.
With podcast co-host Jimmy Jellinek they reached out to the shelter to inquire about adopting the cat. But at first, the shelter couldn’t believe who was on the other end of the phone, according to Fox News.
Jellinek said “We reached out to the shelter. It took us a while for them to actually believe us.”
The shelter’s adoption manager, Danielle Ulmer, said “I was like there is no way this is real, like, someone is pranking us,” per CNN.
After convincing the staff that it was actually him, Quaid was able to meet the cat, Dennis Quaid, over a zoom call.
This weekend Jellinek will travel from Los Angeles, California, to Lynchburg, Virginia, to bring the cat home and make the adoption official.
Quaid joked that, “Maybe they should start naming animals in shelters after different celebrities and see who bites,” according to Fox News.
