Country music star Carrie Underwood has stayed fairly private about her political views over the years.

“I feel like more people try to pin me places politically,” the “Jesus Take the Wheel” singer told The Guardian in 2019. “I try to stay far out of politics if possible, at least in public, because nobody wins. It’s crazy. Everybody tries to sum everything up and put a bow on it, like it’s black and white. And it’s not like that.”

On Monday, in a moment Underwood has said transcends politics, the eight-time Grammy winner took the stage at the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C., to perform “America the Beautiful” at President Trump’s inauguration.

“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event,” she said in a statement to People. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”

Underwood seemed to have a bit of a surprise at the start when the music accompaniment to “America the Beautiful” didn’t play. The music started and then abruptly stopped, and Underwood appeared to be waiting for it to resume.

Instead, she ultimately took on the performance a capella, inviting those in attendance to sing along with her.

The lyrics to “America the Beautiful” rang out throughout the Capitol Rotunda as people sang together in unison.

After belting out the words with her powerhouse vocals, Underwood applauded and acknowledged those in attendance for joining her in the performance.

What else is Carrie Underwood up to?

It’s a busy season for Underwood.

In March, the singer returns to the show that launched her career 20 years ago, when she was a 21-year-old “American Idol” contestant from small-town Oklahoma. Now, for the first time in her career, she will serve as a judge on “American Idol.”

“I feel like being on both sides of the coin I’ll be able to hopefully offer some insight and help,” Underwood told Billboard.

Underwood released her latest album, “Denim & Rhinestones,” in 2022, and brought her tour in support of that album through Salt Lake City.

“Throughout her nearly two-hour set, Underwood’s music had hints of country, gospel, pop, soul, jazz, blues and hard rock. One song would mimic Dolly Parton’s soft, lilting style, and the next would elicit a rasp that would’ve been right at home with Axl (Rose) and his cronies,” as I reviewed for the Deseret News. “One minute the arena felt like a small chapel and the next it was a full on rock show, complete with Underwood pounding out an unexpected drum solo.

It’s a shocking versatility, and Underwood doesn’t hold back."
