“The Chosen” provided a behind-the-scenes look at a brand new set, built for the upcoming fifth season of the series.
In a new clip shared by “The Chosen,” production designer James Cunningham gives a tour of the new set, located at the sound stage.
“We are in Caiaphas’ house, who is the high priest of Jerusalem at the time,” Cunningham says in the clip. “So this season we had to build all new sets, because we’re in Jerusalem now, we’re not in Capernaum anymore.”
Cunningham said “The Chosen” set designers combined multiple styles to create the look they used for homes of wealthy Jews.
“For the more wealthy Jews, we like to take kind of the orientalist style — which in the 1800s, we see lots of paintings of it — and it’s kind of Moroccan, it’s Indian, it’s a little bit of Turkish. So we took all that and made that into the style for our upper class Jews."
The set includes a large vestibule, sticker tiles and an elaborate midrash.
“The midrash is where people would come together and talk, and exchange ideas. So this would be a space where they would come and gather and talk to Caiapus,” said Cunningham.
He continued, “This is the ultimate midrash, we wanted to really make it feel like he is very opulent, and just such a distinction between the lower class and the upper class.”
While creating the set for Caiaphas' home, Cunningham considered the style used for Pilate’s home, he wanted to make their homes visually distinct from each other.
“We wanted to make a real difference between Pilate’s house and Caiaphas’ house,” he said. “So we brought the color way down, because Pilate’s is very bright — reds and golds. We kept the golds in here just because gold was kind of a status symbol, and we went with the blues and the terracottas.”

What to expect from ‘The Chosen’ Season 5
The fifth season of “The Chosen” will pick up right where the fourth season of the series left off, Dallas Jenkins told Variety.
“It’s Holy Week, so Season 4 ends with the triumphal entry. Season 5 picks up where it left off, and Season 6 is going to be the crucifixion, so we essentially cover five days,” Jenkins told the outlet. “We cover the most famous week in history.”
Season 5 will feature “a lot of truth bombs, a lot of mic-drop moments” from Jesus, Jenkins added.
“This is actually going to be a season that is in some ways kind of cool and kind of fun, even though (the viewers) know what’s coming and it’s definitely got a lot of weight over it. But we just couldn’t have three seasons in a row with nothing but pain and loss and misery.”
A logline for the upcoming season reads: “The people of Israel welcome Jesus as king while his disciples anticipate his crowning. But — instead of confronting Rome — he turns the tables on the Jewish religious festival. Their power threatened, the country’s religious and political leaders will go to any length to ensure this Passover meal is Jesus’ last,” per “The Chosen” site.
