Matthew McConaughey met Pope Leo XIV Wedneday at a St. Peter’s Basilica service.
After McConaughey and his wife, Camila Alves, attended the pope’s weekly audience in Vatican City, the pair was greeted by the pope while he made his way through the church to speak with attendants.
A video posted by The Associated Press shows the short interaction. Though the conversation is indistinguishable, the video shows McConaughey shaking the pope’s hand, patting his shoulder and exchanging a quick greeting.
McConaughey expressed being a “believer” in God in a 2020 interview with Relevant Magazine and said he regularly attends church.
“I go to church once a week,” he said. “I go, I pray and I do inventory. I take a deep breath, understand myself as me being number two in God’s house, and go back through my week.”
