Update: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has decided to delay the launch of the temple ceremonial clothing until the COVID-19 pandemic calms. A new release date has not yet been set.

SALT LAKE CITY — The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced adjustments to the sacred ceremonial clothing worn by members in Latter-day Saint temples.

The changes were announced through a letter to local leaders Friday, which also included answers to specific questions detailing the adjustments.

The letter states that these changes are designed to make the temple clothing “more simple, comfortable and cost-effective,” as well as enhance the temple experience, according to a news release.

According to the frequently asked questions, the changes to sacred clothing include a simpler design for the veil and robe. The cap will no longer come with a plastic insert or a tie from cap to veil, and the robe, cap and sash will have more durable fabric.

The robe, cap, sash and envelope will be made of the same material. The apron will not change.

If preferred, members may still continue to use their current ceremonial clothing. “It need not be replaced by the new style,” according to the letter.

“These clothing adjustments do not change temple doctrine or symbolism but are designed to enhance members’ experience in the temple and make the ceremonial clothing easier to put on, care for and afford,” the letter states.

The new ceremonial clothing styles will be available to purchase on March 31, according to the church’s online store.
