The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released maps Thursday showing the exact locations of three temples in the western United States — in Smithfield, Utah; Casper, Wyoming; and Elko, Nevada.
Smithfield Utah Temple
The Smithfield Utah Temple will be built on 13.3 acres at the intersection of 800 West and 100 North, according to a news release.
The temple will be three stories consisting of approximately 81,000 square feet.
Smithfield’s population is 12,025 people, according to 2019 U.S. Census Bureau estimates. It is the second largest city in Cache County. The largest is Logan, home of a pioneer-era temple. President Russell M. Nelson announced in April 2019 that the church would renovate all of its pioneer-era temples, in Salt Lake City, St. George, Manti and Logan. Renovation is underway on the Salt Lake Temple and St. George temple. The Manti temple renovation will begin this fall, President Nelson has said.
More than 2.1 million Latter-day Saints live in Utah.
The church is in the process of constructing 10 temples in Utah — Smithfield, Ephraim, Layton, Lindon, Orem, St. George (Red Cliffs), Saratoga Springs, Syracuse, Taylorsville and Tooele (Deseret Peak).
The church has 17 operating temples in the state, though several are under renovation.
Casper Wyoming Temple
The Casper Wyoming Temple will go up on 9.5 acres at the intersection of southwest Wyoming Boulevard and Eagle Drive, the news release said.
The temple is expected to be one story tall with 10,000 square feet.
Casper, with an estimated 2019 population of 57,931, will be home to the second Latter-day Saint temple in Wyoming. The Star Valley Wyoming Temple is located across the state in Afton.
Wyoming is home to over 67,000 Latter-day Saints.
Elko Nevada Temple
The Elko Nevada Temple is planned for a 5.2-acre site on Ruby Vista Drive near Jennings Way on the southeast corner of Ruby View Golf Course, according to the news release.
It will be a single-story temple of roughly 10,000 square feet.
The Elko temple will be the third temple in Nevada. The others are in Las Vegas and Reno.
Elko has a population of 52,778. Nevada is home to more than 184,000 Latter-day Saints.
What will these temples look like?
The news release said design plans for the three temples remain under development. The church’s special projects department soon will begin to work with city officials on preliminary plans and then file public documents.
Dates for the traditional groundbreaking ceremonies will be announced in the future.
The church operates 168 temples, with eight of them under renovation. Another 84 temples have been announced or are under construction.
