The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced that construction of the Maceió Brazil Temple will begin this October with a groundbreaking ceremony.
The ceremony will be held Saturday, Oct. 10, and will be presided over by Elder B. Corey Cuvelier of the Brazil Area Presidency.
The Maceió Brazil Temple was first announced in April 2022 and will become the fourth Latter-day Saint temple to break ground this year, following the groundbreaking of the Santos Brazil Temple in August.
“The doctrine of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints centers on the family,” church President Dallin H. Oaks taught in a recent general conference. “Essential to our doctrine on the family is the temple. The ordinances received there enable us to return as eternal families to the presence of our Heavenly Father.”
The Church of Jesus Christ currently has 24 announced temples for Brazil.
Of these 24, 11 are currently in operation in Brazil. One temple is scheduled for dedication, five are in planning and design stages, and five others are currently under construction.
The Santos Brazil Temple will join these in construction this August, and the Maceió Brazil Temple will begin construction in October — bringing the total number of temples under construction in Brazil to seven.
Together, the church’s current and future temples in Brazil will help serve the more than 1.5 million Latter-day Saints that call the South American nation home.
