Amid climbing egg prices, Pennsylvania State Police have yet to crack the case on the heist of 100,000 eggs.
More than $40,000 worth of organic eggs were stolen from Pete & Gerry’s Organics LLC distribution trailer in Pennsylvania on Saturday night, per USA Today. Now five days into the investigation, the case is turning cold and police are turning to the community for leads.
“We’re relying on leads from people from the community. So we’re hoping that somebody knows something, and they’ll call us and give us some tips,” Trooper First Class Megan Frazer, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania State Police, told The Associated Press.
“In my career, I’ve never heard of a hundred thousand eggs being stolen. This is definitely unique,” she added.
The bizarre theft has attracted national attention and generated buzz on social media — but commenters aren’t speculating over suspects; rather, the logistics behind an egg theft of this magnitude.
“How do you take? and where do you put 100,000 eggs?” an X user asked.
Another question commenters are asking: How can anyone make good use of 100,000 eggs?
“What does one even do with 100000 eggs? Quiche for everyone?” one person wrote on Reddit.
Another Reddit user joked, “Easter Bunny is stocking up! Knew they couldn’t be trusted.”
Frazer says the Pennsylvania police have a few theories, but still no definite answer.
“The thieves could sell them or even use them for vandalizing purposes,” Frazer said in a statement shared with The New York Times. “We don’t know what purpose of stealing 100,000 would be for at this time. With the extreme increased price of eggs, someone may have thought they could sell them.”
“The only thing similar I have encountered during my career,” she added, “was a stolen trailer full of ‘tainted chickens.’”

While Pennsylvania police continue to investigate the 100,000 egg heist, social media users are joking about the absurdness of the theft.
