I am heartsick by the way Sen. Mitt Romney was treated on an airline flight by fellow Utahns. I was especially disheartened to hear those Utahns claim to be traveling to Washington, D.C., on an errand to preach of God and Jesus Christ.

Similarly, I would be just as dismayed to see my new congressman, Rep. Burgess Owens treated with comparable cruelty by people who disagree with the way he voted. I did not vote for Rep. Owens and I disagree with his vote to overturn the election. Still, if I met him in public, I would defend him from cruelty and treat him with humanity, respect and dignity. I believe we could have a civil conversation, find common ground, and even brainstorm ways to work together to improve our great nation.

We can disagree without hating each other. Our opposing beliefs do not negate our common humanity. We have work to do as Utahns. Let’s work together and treat everyone with warmth and consideration.
