OGDEN — Weber State football has a new offensive coordinator and it is a familiar face.
It was announced early Tuesday evening that head coach Jay Hill has selected Matt Hammer for the role.
“We are very excited about Matt becoming our offensive coordinator. He is a terrific football coach with a tremendous background and knowledge on both sides of the ball. I’m excited to watch what our offense becomes under his leadership.” — Weber State coach Jay Hill
“We are very excited about Matt becoming our offensive coordinator,” Hill said in a statement. “He is a terrific football coach with a tremendous background and knowledge on both sides of the ball. I’m excited to watch what our offense becomes under his leadership.”
Hammer coached Weber State’s inside linebackers this past season and helped lead the Wildcats to a third-straight Big Sky title, a trip to the FCS Semifinals and a third-place national ranking.
The 2019 season marked the beginning of Hammer’s second stint at Weber State. The Southern Utah alumnus spent seven seasons (2006-12) as an assistant coach in Ogden previously. For four of those years Hammer was Weber State’s offensive coordinator (2009-12) under head coaches Ron McBride and Jody Sears.
In between his stints at Weber State, Hammer spent six seasons as the head coach at Weber High School. He led the Warriors to back-to-back unbeaten Region 1 titles and two appearances in the 6A quarterfinals of the state tournament. He was named the 6A Coach of the Year in 2017 and twice named the region Coach of the Year.

“I’m thrilled for this opportunity to work with our offense,” Hammer said in a statement. “I love the players and I’m looking forward to working with them and the coaching staff and getting our offense where we want it to be.”
Hammer fills the void left by former offensive coordinator Dave Schramm, who was recently named the running backs coach at Utah State University. Schramm spent two seasons (2018-19) as the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator, helping the team to a 21-7 overall mark and 14-2 conference record.
