High school girls basketball: Notes and highlights from Friday’s slate of games

McRae’s 23 points lead Hawks to victory over Granger

Brinlee McRae was golden for the Hawks, racking up 23 points and finishing the game with six defensive rebounds, three assists and five steals to lead Alta in the 51-44 win at home. Teammate Sadie Gardner added 10 points and eight rebounds in the winning effort.

For Granger, Caitlyn Olsen put up a big 17 points and Ruby Vaitu’u added another 12 in the loss.

Layton rallies past Roy in Region 1 match-up

After losing their momentum in the third quarter, the Lancers rallied back to retake their lead and secure the 49-42 victory over Roy. Hailey Cuppett was instrumental in the Layton comeback, scoring nine of her 16 points in the fourth quarter and hitting a crucial late 3-pointer to seal the win.

Saige Nielsen put up a game-high 20 points for the Royals in the loss, including four 3-pointers, four rebounds, and three assists.

Layton improves to 2-0 in Region 1 play, and will visit Weber on Tuesday.

Springville defense stuns Wasatch for the win

The Red Devil defense came out hot, holding Wasatch scoreless in the first quarter and giving Springville the momentum it needed to secure the 41-20 victory at home.

Addisyn Johnson had a game-high 12 points for Springville in the win while teammates Ellie Esplin and Kayla Jackson also reached double-digits.

The Red Devils improve to 2-0 in region play while handing the Wasps their second region loss of the season. Springville will take on Payson this coming Tuesday and Wasatch will host Spanish Fork.

Leopards squeeze past Bengals in Region 6 play

After a back-and-forth battle, the Leopards rallied for a strong fourth quarter to take the narrow 49-47 victory over Brighton. Mia Tarver had 16 points in the win and Taina Lee added another 14 to round out the East offense.

Abby Berg had a game-high 20 points, 18 of which came from behind the arc, to lead the Bengals. Teammates Chesney Chin and Lilly Cheatham also scored in double-digits in the loss.

This was East’s region opener, and they will host Cottonwood on Tuesday for another Region 6 match-up.

Richfield prevails against Morgan in nonregion clash

After a slow start, the Wildcats outscored the Trojans by 19 in the second quarter to take a demanding lead and cruise to the 57-47 victory on the road.

Nicole Willardson put up 16 points to lead her team while Rebecca Poulsen added another 13, including three 3-pointers, in the win.

Morgan’s Alvia Jaffa finished the game with an impressive double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds while Janel Blazzard and Alex Trussell added 13 points apiece in the loss.

Duchesne rolls past Monticello in region opener

Oakley Butler had 11 points to lead a balanced scoring attack in Duchesne’s 40-31 victory against Monticello. The Eagles start their region season off with a victory, and will host Gunnison Valley on Tuesday for another Region 16 match-up.

Avery Shumway put up 10 points for Monticello in the loss.

Altamont narrowly escapes with victory against Enterprise

The Longhorns had a 10-point lead going into the fourth quarter, but narrowly escaped with a 43-41 win as the Wolves closed in. Maddy Zeeman led all scorers with 19 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead Altamont to victory.

Altamont improves to 3-3 on the season, and will host North Summit on Tuesday to begin Region 16 play.
