BYU officially has its first transfer portal addition of the current cycle.

Former Utah and UCLA tight end Carsen Ryan has committed to the Cougars, he announced Monday night in a social media post. He will have one season of eligibility to play in Provo.

Ryan appeared in all 12 games in 2024 for the Utes, catching 10 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.

Prior to arriving at Utah, he spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons at UCLA, where he logged 19 catches for 287 yards and three scores.

Coming out of high school, the American Fork product was rated as a 4-star recruit by 247 Sports as the No. 3 player in the state of Utah.

Ryan’s signing with BYU fills a major hole for the Cougars, as the team’s tight end cupboard appears quite bare moving forward. BYU’s two most productive players at the position in 2024 — Keanu Hill and Mata’ava Ta’ase — are both currently seniors with no remaining eligibility.

Additionally, former 4-star prospect Jackson Bowers has entered the transfer portal, and impressive freshman Ryner Swanson will be departing the program for two years to serve a full-time mission in Kenya.

Thus, Ryan should expected to be the Cougars’ lead tight end in 2025, where his versatility in being able to play attached to the offensive line, in the slot and lined up in the backfield as an H-back will be quite valuable within Aaron Roderick’s offense.
