As always, social media has been full of unapologetic opinions this week. Utah Hockey Club fans have been focused on one thing: team name voting.

The team released a survey Wednesday, allowing fans to vote on the team’s name, logo and branding. On Thursday, the team announced that one of the previous options, Wasatch, would be replaced with the heavily requested Outlaws.

All in favor of Mammoth?

The majority of fans seem to be set on “Mammoth.”

Some have expressed concern that the Colorado Mammoth lacrosse team already exists, but Smith Entertainment Group executive Mike Maughan answered that issue in a press conference on Wednesday.

“As you go into this trademark process, you realize that there is no name, other than a made-up name, that doesn’t have some trademark conflict,” he said. “We have an incredible team that’s been working on all of these names for many months, and we’re confident in the path we have for any of these names that are part of this list.”

It’s also worth noting that plenty of professional sports teams share names (i.e. the Florida Panthers and the Carolina Panthers; the New York Rangers and the Texas Rangers, etc.)

Fans have already started using the hashtag #TusksUp and mammoth emojis to show their support for the name.

There have also been musings that the team could sport tusk decals on the sides of their helmets in an outdoor game, similar to what the Detroit Red Wings are doing at the Stadium Series in March.

Where are the Outlaws at?

After receiving feedback against Wasatch and in favor of Outlaws, SEG replaced the former with the latter. There seems to be less support for this name, but fans have plenty of good branding ideas.

A handful of fans showed up to Sunday’s game in cowboy hats and bandanas in support for Outlaws. As one fan pointed out, though, if everyone were to wear cowboy hats to games, every seat aside from the front row would be limited-view.

The general consensus seems to be that the Utah Hockey Club name is not highly favored, but the proposed logo associated with the name is.

The logo, which has now been leaked, features the head of a mythical, yeti-like snow creature in the shape of a mountain range.

Generally, people have expressed distaste and confusion for the Hockey Club name.

How to vote for the Utah Hockey Club name

Voting is only available at select Utah Hockey Club games, the last of which is Tuesday against the Philadelphia Flyers. The polls remain open throughout the entire game.
