BYU is losing a contributor in its wide receiver room.
Cody Hagen is medically retiring from football, according to reports from multiple outlets that have since been confirmed by both BYU and Hagen himself.
Injuries have plagued Hagen in recent years, including a torn PCL last December which he played through, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.
In two seasons with the Cougars, Hagen caught 15 passes for 126 yards, adding 93 more yards on nine carries with two touchdowns on the ground.
He ran for a 57-yard score in BYU’s 2025 opener against Portland State, and his 32-yard end zone trip at Colorado put the Cougars ahead for good in an eventual 24-21 victory.
The speedster from Draper was rated as a 4-star prospect by 247 Sports, ranking as the No. 5 recruit in the state of Utah and No. 55 receiver nationally for the class of 2022.
During his career at Corner Canyon High, Hagen logged 201 receptions for 3,927 yards and 51 touchdowns, helping the Chargers win three state championships and earning Utah Gatorade Player of the Year honors as a senior. He also excelled in track and field, winning four individual state titles.
Hagen, who recently participated in spring practices with the Cougars and was entering his junior season of competition, will remain a student at BYU, according to KSL Sports.
Given Hagen’s departure, along with 2025’s top receivers Parker Kingston and Chase Roberts moving on from the program, BYU will now lean on its remaining pass-catching corps of receivers Jojo Phillips, Tiger Bachmeier, Reggie Frischknecht, Kyler Kasper and Tei Nacua, as well as new tight ends Walker Lyons and Roger Saleapaga.
