Thanks in large part to the efforts of now-head coach Morgan Scalley, the Utah Utes football program has a long history of success with landing elite high school defensive backs from Texas on the recruiting trail.

On Friday, another such player — safety Darrod “Bug” Jacobs out of Memorial High in Port Arthur, Texas — announced his commitment to the Utes on social media as part of their quickly growing 2027 recruiting class.

Listed at 6-foot-2 and in the neighborhood of 175 and 180 pounds depending on the website, Jacobs also holds scholarship offers from several other Big 12 schools, along with Pitt, Northwestern and a bunch from Group of Six programs.

UteZone’s Dan Sorensen reported on June 2 that Jacobs’ final three schools under consideration were Utah, Pitt and Northwestern, and the plan at that point was to announce his commitment on July 4.

The commitment of Jacobs brings the Utes’ total to nine high school prospects pledged to the program as part of the Class of 2027 and continues a hot run, as six of those have come this month, with five this week alone.
