The BYU Cougars men’s basketball program has lost a key member of its coaching staff.

Earlier this week, Boise State announced that it has hired former Cougars associate head coach Will Voigt to the same position.

“Boise has been my home base for over a decade,” Voigt said in a school news release. “I’m elated to be closer to my kids and work for a highly-successful and consistent program as we transition into the Pac-12.

“I would like to thank coach (Leon) Rice and (Boise State athletic director) Jeramiah Dickey for this tremendous opportunity.”

On Thursday, Voigt wrote a similar message on social media.

Boise State, along with several other programs including Utah State, officially joined the Pac-12 Conference on Wednesday.

This will be the latest stop in a fascinating basketball journey for the 49-year-old Voigt that has included time in the NBA, college, professional club ball overseas, minor league basketball in the United States (including the NBA G League) and two African national teams.

Voigt arrived at BYU in 2024 most known for inventing the “peel switch” defensive scheme, but he was also considered the Cougars’ “offensive coordinator.”

As far as the Cougars’ coaching staff is considered moving forward, Tim Fanning still also holds the title of associate head coach, while Brandon Dunson, Chris Burgess and John Linehan all have the title of assistant coach.
