Coy Doman, Pine View (So.)
Pine View new starting quarterback Coy Doman got off to a flying start this season.
Through two games, Doman has thrown for 857 yards and eight touchdowns with a 65.1 completion percentage.
In last week’s 34-30 win over Cedar, he tossed a 21-yard TD pass to Carter Buchanan with 2:02 remaining to lead the Panthers to the come-from-behind win.
“Coy Doman is the kind of quarterback every coach wants leading his team. He is tough, competitive, intelligent and extremely coachable, and he continues to grow every week. What stands out most about Coy is his leadership and the confidence his teammates have in him,” said Pine View coach Ray Hosner. “He prepares the right way, stays composed under pressure and isn’t afraid to compete when the game is on the line. Coy has a very bright future, but more importantly, he is a great young man and teammate who represents Pine View Football the right way. We are fortunate to have him leading the Panthers.”
Girls Volleyball
Audrey White, Green Canyon (Sr.)
Green Canyon ran its record to 3-0 this young season with statement wins over Woods Cross and Orem last week, and one of the catalysts to those wins was senior Audrey White.
For the season, the outside hitter has racked up 64 kills with a .321 hitting percentage. She’s averaging 5.4 kills per set. She has also recorded 37 digs.
“Audrey is a player we know we can count on in the small and big moments. She is a consistent, smart and reliable player. She was out (part) of the season with an ACL last year, so it has been really great to have her back,” said Green Canyon coach Madison Larsen.
White missed the first eight games last season recovering from the ACL injury, but made a big impact regardless and was voted second team all-state.
White has committed to Utah State.
Girl Soccer
Kate Willard, Davis (Sr.)
Senior Kate Willard has found the back of the net in all seven of Davis’ wins this year, and is the indispensable piece to the Darts’ attack.
Through seven games, she’s recorded 11 goals and two assists, including a pair of goals in each of Davis’ wins over Skyridge and Maple Mountain last week.
“Kate Willard has had a massive impact for us this year. She is driven to learn and improve each and every game regardless of her performance,” said Davis coach Dillon Richens. “Her ability to be an elite competitor while also finding joy in the game has helped jumpstart our season.”
Willard has committed to play at Weber State at the next level.
Boys Cross Country
Carson Stafford, Riverton (Jr.)
Carson Stafford had a great showing at the Park City Twilight meet last week, leading Riverton to the first-place team finish.
The junior finished first with a time of 15:18.9, seven seconds ahead of teammate Kurt Perry.
Led by Stafford and Perry, Riverton won the team title with 28 points.
“Carson possesses a mindset that is incredible for any age. He is confident in who he is as a person and the goals that he has and that translates to being very deliberate in practice and incredibly fast on race days. He has a very bright future in this sport,” said Riverton coach Marcus Dickson.
The week prior, Stafford finished second at the Region 2 pre-region cross country meet.
Last year, Stafford ran for Tahoma High School in Maple Valley, Washington.
Girls Cross Country
Adria Favero, Olympus (Sr.)
Olympus’ Adria Favero enjoyed a strong performance at the Park City Twilight meet last week at Quinn’s Junction.
The senior won with a time of 18:10.40, finishing 13 seconds ahead of Riverton runner-up Isabel Preston.
“Adria Favero is such a dedicated athlete; We are so fortunate to have her leading our team. She’s a fierce competitor, who is so passionate about running and is fully committed to the sport,” said Olympus coach Chris Humbert. “She’s always learning and has demonstrated that she doesn’t let setbacks get her down, she stays positive, and she comes out stronger.”
Favero has been one of the top runners in 5A for each of the past three seasons. She finished second at the 5A state cross country meet as a freshman, third as a sophomore and then fourth last year as a junior.
She’ll be one of the top contenders at the state meet again later this fall.
Girls Tennis
Emmi Heap, Weber (Jr.)
It’s been a perfect start to the season for Weber’s Emmi Heap.
The junior is undefeated in 10 matches this season at first singles, including wins over Farmington and Box Elder No. 1s last week.
The week prior, Heap had a strong win against Skyline’s top player in three sets.
Heap competed last season at second singles, advancing all the way to the 6A semifinals where she lost to eventual state champion Sophia Leavitt of American Fork.
Boys Golf
Brody Loutensock, Cyprus (Sr.)
Cyprus senior Brody Loutensock shot a 2-under 70 at Oquirrh Hills Golf Course last week to win his first Region 4 match of the season. He’s averaging 73 in two matches so far this fall.
Loutensock is not only the defending Region 4 medalist this year, but he’s trying to help Cyprus win a fifth straight region title.
The senior also competed against a strong field at the Black Desert Invitational, posting rounds of 81 and 75 to finish 25th among 60 golfers.
“Those performances are the latest chapters in a remarkable high school career defined by hard work, dedication and steady improvement,” said Cyprus coach Jeff McDonald. “As a freshman, Loutensock averaged 111. Four years later, he has lowered his scoring average to 73.5.”
He’s a team captain as well this year.
“His team-first approach is evident in the way he pushes his teammates to improve and become the best versions of themselves. His commitment to the Pirates’ success demonstrates his passion for his teammates and loyalty to the Cyprus golf program,” added McDonald. “Loutensock leads by example and has become someone his teammates can look to for guidance throughout the season.”
Baseball
Simon Buer, American Heritage (Sr.)
American Heritage senior Simon Buer has been tearing it up early this season for the Patriots.
Through nine games, Buer is batting .417 with a .517 on-base percentage. He also has a .934 OPS with three stolen bases.
“Simon is a great leader on the team. Our younger players look to him as an example of Christ-like character through how he plays the game, respects coaches, umpires and other teams. He also provides an anchor to the outfield as our centerfielder. Simon is a trusted offensive and defensive player, and an even better young man,” said American Heritage coach Blake Jansen.
Last week in a sweep of Freedom Prep, Buer went 3 for 4 at the plate with a pair of RBIs.
