In a battle of two undefeated teams, it was Lone Peak sneaking past Syracuse to win Tuesday in four sets by scores of 25-22, 25-23, 18-25 and 26-24.

“I think we played really well. We were a great serving team. Our kids battled with that. We were missing some of our outside hitters today. I’m very impressed with how well they played together and continued to battle until the very end,” said Lone Peak head coach Kalee Faumui.

After taking the first two sets, it seemed like Lone Peak was on its way to a comfortable victory.

Syracuse did not make things easy for them, however. Every time Lone Peak would try to pull away and deliver the knockout blow, Syracuse would get up and punch right back with a good combination of service and net play.

After struggling to begin the third set, Syracuse went on a 15-3 run late to grab the momentum and take the middle set.

“A big thing we’ve been talking to our kids about is to always push back. We don’t ever want to be on our heels. We never want to be emotionally on our heels,” said Faumui. “It is just about continuing to push back every single time we’re on the court and I think they did that tonight. When they got in big runs against us, we responded by pushing back.”

Lone Peak never panicked throughout the game and stuck to what has made it so dominant to start the season.

“I told them that they already have it. They definitely have all the keys and all the tools they need to finish and emotionally, they just need to stay in it,” Faumui said.

“We’re a great serving team. I think that catches a lot of people off guard. We have some nasty servers from the line, and our offense is pretty balanced. I would say that definitely is helping us.”
