The search for Brian Laundrie took an interesting turn Wednesday as the FBI is reportedly investigating a potential burner phone that Laundrie might have purchased.
Multiple reports suggested that FBI agents visited an AT&T store near Laundrie’s family home in North Port, Florida, to look at any surveillance footage.
Sources told TMZ, which was first to report the story, that Laundrie was spotted going into the store with an older woman on Sept. 14, which was the same day members of the Laundrie family said they last saw their son.
The Laundries’ family lawyer, Steven Bertolino, confirmed to TMZ that a new phone was bought at the store. But, he said, the phone is reportedly the same one that the FBI already has in its possession.
Bertolino told the New York Post that Laundrie left his home in North Port, Florida, without his wallet or his cellphone on the day he disappeared. He also told the New York Post that Laundrie’s parents were worried Laundrie might harm himself when he left the home.
The Laundrie family told police on Sept. 17 that he was missing. Laundrie is a person of interest in the death of Gabby Petito. The two of them traveled throughout the country this summer, but only Laundrie returned to their home in North Port on Sept. 1. Petito was reported missing on Sept. 11.
Meanwhile, the U.S. District Court of Wyoming has issued a federal arrest warrant for Laundrie last week because of a “use of unauthorized access device” related to activities after the death of Petito.
The FBI said it is investigating surveillance footage from Fort De Soto Park in Florida, too. Laundrie’s parents recently visited the location for a camping trip. Reports have suggested Laundrie was there with the family during that trip.
