TAYLORSVILLE — A Salt Lake man threw a dog down a hall, killing the animal, shortly after his girlfriend told him she loved her dog more than him, police say.
Yulong Du, 23, was arrested Sunday for investigation of aggravated cruelty to animals, assault, criminal mischief and intoxication.
Du and his girlfriend had been arguing Saturday night. He left the apartment, but “returned a short time later intoxicated” and the argument resumed, according to a police affidavit.
The girlfriend allegedly told Du to sleep on the floor. At some point during the night, Du got up to use the bathroom and “became extremely upset that the victim’s dog was sleeping in the bed with the victim,” the affidavit states.
The two began to argue again, and the girlfriend told Du she “loved the dog more than (him),” according to the report.
The two then began fighting over the dog, each trying to gain control of the animal, police say. Some furniture was knocked over and the woman received minor injuries as they fought over the dog.
Du repeatedly told the woman he was going to kill the dog during the struggle, the affidavit states. Once he gained possession of the dog, he “threw the dog to the floor in the hallway just outside the bedroom, striking the clothes washer,” police wrote in the report.
The dog then “shook in a seizure type manner and passed away.”
The girlfriend told police she had had the Maltese dog since it was a puppy 13 years ago.
