SALT LAKE CITY — Somewhere between the turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing, another Thanksgiving staple is probably jiggling on tables across Utah.
But how do people in the Beehive State prefer their Jell-O?
A new poll shows 31% like it plain, while only 16% like it with fruit. The UtahPolicy.com poll also found 24% eat it with fruit and whipped topping and 23% with whipped topping only.
And a mere 1% prefer it the stereotypical Utah way — with shredded carrots.
Utahns are big on Jell-O. The Utah Legislature recognized it as a favorite snack food of Utah. Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, hosted “Jell-O with the Senator” every Wednesday in his Washington, D.C., office. His website shows a cup of green Jell-O topped with cream.
The poll didn’t ask about flavors or colors of Jell-O, but during the 2002 Salt Lake Olympics , the most sought-after collectible pin represented a bowl of green Jell-O.
How often do Utahns eat the gelatin dessert?
The survey showed 11% have it once a month or more, 34% a few times a year, 27% once a year or less and 28% never eat it.
Because UtahPolicy.com is a political newsletter, it broke out the survey results according to political persuasion.
Democrats , Republicans and independent were mostly split between serving Jell-O plain or with fruit and whipped topping.
Those who identified as not very strong Democrats and independents who lean Republican were the biggest on plain. And 5% of not strong Democrats like Jell-O with shredded carrots, more than any other political group in the poll.
Y2 Analytics conducted the survey for UtahPolicy.com of 979 registered Utah voters from Sept. 25 to Oct. 8. The overall margin of error is plus or minus 3.8% and 7.2% to 20% in the subgroups.
