SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City police arrested a man over the weekend for allegedly killing his dog.

Daniel Figueroa, 26, was arrested Friday for investigation of torture of a companion animal. The alleged incident happened on Dec. 29, when a witness saw Figueroa “slamming a dog into the ground,” according to a police booking affidavit.

Figueroa originally told officers that “he had accidentally pulled the dog’s leash too hard and caused it to hit its head on a pole,” the affidavit states. The animal was described in police reports as a “small, yorkie-type dog.”

Last week, the autopsy report on the dog was completed and revealed “the cause of death was blunt force trauma,” according to the affidavit. Figueroa was arrested the next day.
