TAYLORSVILLE — Tracy Wyant, chief of the Unified police’s Taylorsville precinct, on Monday was tapped to lead the city’s new police department.
City leaders decided in June to end their contract with the Unified Police Department and move police services in-house. The new department is set to be up and running by July 1, 2021.
“We are so happy to extend this offer to Chief Wyant and that he has accepted,” Mayor Kristie Overson said in a press release, Wyant has worked as precinct chief since 2012.
Wyant has worked in law enforcement for 23 years, serving in a myriad of assignments and positions with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the Unified Police Department and the former Taylorsville Police Department that operated from 2005 to 2012. He holds both bachelor’s and associate degrees in criminal justice.
According to the city, the appointment is an executive function exercised by the mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. “We knew Chief Wyant was the one and that he was our top choice,” Overson said. “As such, we did not feel it was fair to put others through an unnecessary hiring process. Chief Wyant has proven his worth and has been with Taylorsville since the beginning. He will be exceptional in leading us to this next level.”
