SALT LAKE CITY — A number of Wasatch Front high schools are taking steps to stem the spread of COVID-19 after an uptick of cases.

Northridge High School in Layton switched to online learning Wednesday after health officials notified educators of 15 confirmed cases of COVID-19 associated with the school over the past two weeks.

Meanwhile, Syracuse High School has experienced a like increase in cases and will commence a “soft closure” expected to last until Nov. 19. All classes will be conducted online during that period. There will be no classes on Thursday to allow teachers time to prepare.

In Weber County, Weber High School announced Wednesday evening that it too will move online for two weeks after the health department there identified 15 cases associated with the school, impacting multiple classrooms. The change begins Thursday.

Weber is the third high school in the school district to move online due to the virus. Roy High closed from Oct. 14-18, and students at Bonneville High are expected to return to classrooms Nov. 12 after the school moved online Oct. 28.

In Salt Lake County, the Jordan School District Board of Education announced it will convene a special business session to discuss and possibly take action on a rising number of cases at Copper Hills High School in West Jordan and possibly other schools.

While cases at most schools do not exceed the district’s threshold for action, there are some schools that have significant numbers of students and staff on quarantine, according to the district dashboard.

Golden Fields Elementary School in South Jordan, which has 805 students and staff people in the building, has 43 on quarantine.

At Mountain Ridge High School in Herriman, there are 112 people quarantined among a school population of 2,264.

Hidden Valley Middle School in Bluffdale has 93 people on quarantine among a school population of 1,322.
