WEST JORDAN — A man who was allegedly upset with his son for pointing an Airsoft gun at his sister decided to teach the son a lesson about gun safety by shooting him with the weapon, according to police.

On Sunday, the 27-year-old West Jordan man was arrested for investigation of child abuse. The man shot his 8-year-old son twice “at arms distance” with the Airsoft gun, a police affidavit states.

“The first shot apparently grazed the child’s pants and the second shot struck the child in the left side abdomen area, causing a welt and red marking,” according to the affidavit.

The father said he shot the child “for disciplinary measures” and “to prove a point to his son about gun safety” after the boy allegedly pointed the Airsoft gun “at his little sister’s head,” the affidavit states.

Correction: An earlier headline incorrectly called the weapon a pellet gun instead of an Airsoft gun.
