TOOELE — A woman who police say was transporting more than 200 pounds of marijuana was arrested Wednesday morning.

Just before 6 a.m. a Utah Highway Patrol trooper in Tooele County pulled over a Mercedes Sprinter Van with a California license plate on I-80 for having a suspended registration and no insurance, according to a police affidavit.

“During the course of the traffic stop I began to be suspicious of criminal activity,” the trooper wrote in the affidavit, without giving details of what was suspicious.

A police K9 was brought to the scene that “indicated to the odor of narcotics. I asked the driver if there was any narcotics in the vehicle and she told me there was nothing,” according to the affidavit.

But troopers located a “manufactured compartment built into the rear of the van. Inside the compartment we located a large quantity of marijuana with items to package the marijuana such as a vacuum sealer and bags,” the affidavit states.

Approximately 219 pounds of marijuana was found.

Christina Bergschneider, 49, told police she was being paid to deliver the drugs, according to the affidavit. She was booked into the Tooele County Jail for investigation of marijuana possession greater than 100 pounds, having a hidden compartment for contraband, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a suspended license, not having registration and not having car insurance.
