OGDEN — Police Friday night shot and killed a man suspected of being involved in a sexual assault and robbery.

According to a new release from Ogden Police Chief Eric Young, officers responded to a report at 7:11 p.m. of an aggravated robbery, sexual assault and vehicle theft in which the man displayed a handgun before taking a vehicle and fleeing. Police spotted the stolen vehicle around 11:30 p.m. near 30th Street and Washington Boulevard. As an officer approached the vehicle, the man ran from the car.

Officers gave chase on foot and began searching a backyard in the 2900 block of Grant Avenue, Young said, when the man stood up in the bed of a pickup truck and pointed a handgun at the officers. Two Ogden officers fired their guns, striking the suspect who died at the scene.

Neither of the officers were injured.

Police have not released any other information on the man who died.

Both officers, who were placed on paid administrative leave, were equipped with body cameras and the footage is being gathered, the chief’s statement said.

The Weber County Attorney’s Office Officer Involved Critical Incident Team is conducting an independent investigation while the Ogden Police Department will conduct a separate internal investigation, Young said.

The Weber County investigators are working to identify the suspect and make notification to his family.

The Ogden Police Department is expected to release more information on Sunday.
