Country music singer Waylon Jennings checked out of Baptist Hospital in Nashville following triple bypass heart surgery, saying he feels wonderful and vowing to eat right and give up smoking.

Johnny Cash remained in critical but stable condition at the hospital a day after his double bypass.

Jennings, 51, left the hospital Tuesday, eight days after undergoing surgery.

"I won't smoke any more. I'm going to eat right," Jennings said. "I feel wonderful. I feel great."

Cash, 56, was "awake and alert" Tuesday and was expected to remain hospitalized 10 to 12 days, said hospital spokeswoman Aileen Katcher.

Jennings said he spoke with Cash on Tuesday.

"I seen John twice today," Jennings said. "I told him, `Next time, you're going first.' "
