A $2.8 million Sleep Inn economy hotel is scheduled for construction next year at 106th South and I-15.
Far West Capital Inc., Midvale, an energy company that also developed and operates the Comfort Inn Motor Hotel in Sandy, said groundbreaking for the 124-room Sleep Inn is scheduled for May with opening next fall in time for the 1989-90 ski season.Far West chief financial officer Richard V. Francis said the Sleep Inn is a new hospitality concept by Maryland-based Quality International, the nation's third largest lodging chain, which operates Comfort, Quality and Clarion hotels as well as the new Sleep Inn.
Sleep Inn was originally to be call McSleep Inn but was changed after protests from McDonalds Corp.
Francis said budget hotels have been the fastest growing segment of the industry for the past three years. He said the Comfort Inn at 90th South has averaged 85 percent occupancy this year and has been sold out 70 percent of the time. Francis expects future Comfort Inn overflow to go to the new Sleep Inn.
The Sleep Inn will feature rooms of all one size (210 square feet) and all with a single queen-size bed. All rooms have connecting doors to the adjoining rooms, an enlarged shower, remote control TV, a VCR, oversized desks, bay windows and electronic doors that lock using the guest's own credit card.
Price is $25 for a single and $29 for double occupancy. The inn has no restaurant or meeting rooms.
Francis said efficiencies have been built in that will allow the inn to operate 25 percent more rooms with 25 percent fewer employees - six full-time, 10 part-time - than does the Comfort Inn.
