The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it will investigate reports of fires in the engine compartments of 1985 and 1986 Pontiac Fiero cars.

The preliminary evaluation, the lowest level of investigation by the safety agency, follows the recall in 1987 of 125,000 Fieros from the 1984 model year after similar fire reports.The latest investigation involves about 147,000 Fieros and was ordered after the agency received 16 unconfirmed fire complaints.
