WordPerfect Corp., the Orem-based computer software company, had $57 million in sales in the first quarter of 1989, more than double the $27 million in sales in the same quarter a year ago.

Pete Peterson, executive vice president, said, "We have benefited from the delays of competing products."Most of the company's first quarter sales can be attributed to WordPerfect 5.0, which remains the best-selling word processor for IBM personal computers and compatibles. The 5.0 has generated more than $90 million in revenue for the company since it was released in May 1988, Peterson said.

The increase in revenue is reflected in the number of WordPerfect employees, which now numbers 1,200, including 450 in the customer support department handling 10,000 calls daily.
