A doctor who contracted AIDS from a discarded needle at a hospital was paid $1.35 million to settle a negligence lawsuit filed against the city and two physicians, it was revealed Friday.

The amount of money the city's Health and Hospitals Corp. gave to Dr. Veronica Prego was announced by a judge who released a gag order the day after the out-of-court settlement was reached.Prego, 32, had charged the agency with negligence, claiming that she pricked her finger on a needle filled with blood from an AIDS patient while working as an intern in 1983.

She also accused her supervising intern of leaving the needle with other medical trash in the patient's room, and another doctor of illegally revealing Prego had AIDS.
