An acquaintance who partied with San Francisco 49ers owner Edward DeBartolo Jr. at a pub and then at his home with friends has accused him of sexually assaulting her, police said.
Menlo Park police kept the lid on the investigation for two days before releasing only sketchy details of the woman's allegations on Thursday. But no charges had been filed as the probe into her complaint continued."We wanted to give our investigators a running start," Det. Dominick Peloso said of the delay in reporting the woman's early Tuesday morning complaint. " . . . We think something happened that concerns the police.
"It started as a report of a simple assault and battery, and then when we investigated more, we thought, uh-oh, there may have been a sexual assault," he added, saying that a felony crime might have been involved.
