The Society of Professional Journalists honored Deseret News writers and photographers with seven first-place awards and gave a former managing editor its top award during a reception Saturday night.
Deseret News photographers swept print photography categories, winning 12 of 18 awards given. Photographer Ravell Call won first-place in the general excellence, sports photography and photo essay categories. In sports photography, Call won for photo-graphing a bench-clearing celebration of the Layton High girls soccer team. His photo essay captured the life of two Utahns at Marine boot camp. Judges said Call's portfolio, entered in the general excellence category, had "good detail, great close-ups, action and emotion . . . He worked the angles beautifully."
Photographer Stuart Johnson won first in spot news photography for showing the dismay of a driver after he struck a pedestrian in Provo.
Assistant city editor Scott Taylor and staff writer Karen Owen won first for their spot news coverage of the Alta View Hospital hostage standoff. Taylor was winding up a day of work when the hostage situation broke. He and reporter Owen coordinated coverage and had all of the details on the front porch of the paper's subscribers before many of them knew the situation was going on.
Articles by staff writer Lois M. Collins and sports writer Doug Robinson tied for first in the feature writing competition. Judges said Collins wrote a "moving glimpse of lifelong companions whose time together was coming to a close" in her entry "Wife Holds On." For his article, "Born to Run," Robinson was cited for "nice polished writing . . . reader-friendly without pandering."
